Stripe’s Link wallet now checks out for at least three separate AI agents, and each of them buys the same way. The consumer approves the total inside the chat, and the agent is handed a card number that works once [1].

Meta put Link inside Muse, its personal agent, on 8 September 2026 [2] [7]. Stripe’s own note on that release says Muse can check out instantly at “more than 1 million businesses that accept Link” using a US consumer’s saved payment method, that “for every purchase, consumers are asked to approve the transaction total directly in the chat interface, and Muse never sees their underlying payment details”, and that everywhere else “Link issues Muse a single-use virtual card scoped to the approved purchase” [2]. Stripe puts Link at 300 million users [2], a figure Payments Dive carried on 18 September 2026 next to the roughly one million merchants [1].

Muse was not the first. Payments Dive reports that Stripe introduced Link payments for AI agents at its annual developer conference in April 2026, and that xAI’s Grok Bot and Instinct, a text-message assistant built by Spear Street Technology, were both wired to Link before Meta was [1]. Crypto Briefing dates the Grok Bot launch to 28 August 2026 and says every transaction still needs an explicit human approval before money moves [3]. The same outlet puts the feature behind xAI’s $200-a-month tier, which no other outlet carries, so that figure has one source. Instinct is invite-only and connects to a user’s email, calendar, screen, audio and location, TechCrunch reported on 24 August 2026 [4].

What the merchant actually sees

Stripe assembled this out of parts that already existed: a consumer wallet, a card network and a virtual card number, arranged so the agent never holds anything it can use twice. Alchemy shipped the same shape on 17 September 2026, one-time, tokenised Mastercard credentials issued against a user’s existing card through Mastercard Agent Pay [8] [9].

An agent purchase routed this way lands as an ordinary card authorisation on a single-use number. Nothing in that message says a machine filled the basket. A merchant who cannot already tell agent traffic from human traffic at the front door will not learn it from the acquiring side, and the question of how much of the quarter an agent brought in waits until somebody reconciles it by hand.

What Stripe tried to buy

Stripe and Advent International offered more than $53 billion for PayPal on 15 July 2026, at $60.50 a share, and PayPal’s board turned it down [5] [6]. Payments Dive’s reading on 18 September 2026 is that Stripe needs PayPal’s consumer network and its spread of funding account types to compete in agentic commerce [1]. Link already has 300 million users, and Stripe bid for PayPal anyway.

Nothing else in agentic commerce or payments moved between 19 and 21 September 2026 that carried a number worth printing. It was a weekend.

For most of 2026 the agentic payments argument has been about which new rail wins, scored on protocol volume. The three agents checking out on a saved card in September 2026 are not on a new rail. They are on a card issued for one purchase, inside a wallet that was already there.
