Who runs this site

This is the personal website of Joseph Bankole, based in Montreal, Canada. It is a one-person site. There is no company behind it, no team with access to anything, and no third party I sell or share data with.

What the site does not do

There are no accounts and no login. There is no contact form, no comment section, and nothing you can upload or post. There are no files to download. I do not run advertising, and no advertising or data-broker trackers are loaded anywhere on this site. I never sell, rent, or trade information about visitors, because I do not hold anything worth selling.

Analytics: what I actually measure

Every page on this site, the "page not found" page included, loads PostHog, a product-analytics tool, through one shared script. I use it to answer two questions: how many people read a page, and which links they click on the way out. Specifically it records:

  • A page view when any page loads.
  • $pageleave when you leave a page or close the tab. It carries how far down the page you scrolled and how long the page was open.
  • subscribe_click if you click a link to follow @thearchv.ai, my AI news account on Threads. It stores where on the site the link sits, the page it was on, and the utm_medium tag if the link carries one. It does not store who clicked, and it cannot see whether you went on to follow.
  • newsletter_click if you click a link to The ARCHV Dispatch, the other newsletter on Substack. It stores the link and the page it was on.
  • project_link_click if you click a link out to one of my projects, and founder_link_click if you click a link to my LinkedIn or Instagram. Each stores which link, not who clicked it.
  • contact_click if you click my email address. It stores where on the site the click came from.
  • outbound_click if you follow any other link off this site, such as a source cited in a news edition. It stores the other site's domain name and the page you left from, never the full address you went to.
  • page_404 when the "page not found" page loads. It stores the address that was not found and the page that sent you there (the referrer), so I can find and fix broken links.
  • configurator_select if you pick an answer in the "How I scope a build" demo on the homepage. It stores the question and the answer you picked, nothing typed. The unlisted /lab/ prototype sends the same event, plus hero_skip if you skip its intro.

Each event also carries the technical basics that any web request brings: your IP address, browser, and rough location derived from that IP. It adds the page address, including any tracking tags in it, the page that sent you, your screen and window size, time zone, and browser language. I have turned off autocapture, so PostHog is not recording every click, keystroke, or form field, and scroll depth is recorded only when you leave a page. Session recording, heatmaps, surveys, and page-speed (web vitals) measurement are switched off in the site's code. PostHog only sees the events listed above.

The same PostHog project also receives the analytics for thearchv.ca, another site I run, and I tell the two apart by page address. I honour Do Not Track. If your browser sends that signal, PostHog's script still loads and still keeps its random identifier in your browser (see Cookies below), but it sends no events to PostHog for your visit.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own. PostHog is configured to use browser localStorage rather than cookies, so it stores a random, anonymous identifier in your browser to avoid double-counting the same visitor. That identifier is not linked to a name, an email, or anything else about you. Clearing your browser storage erases it.

Who else sees your visit

Even on a site as simple as this one, a handful of other companies see that a request happened. In the interest of being straight about it:

  • GitHub Pages hosts these files. GitHub receives standard server-log information, including your IP address. See GitHub's privacy statement.
  • PostHog receives the analytics events described above.
  • Google Fonts serves the typefaces. Loading them means Google sees your IP address.
  • Your email client only if you click my email address, which opens a pre-addressed message to partnerships@josephbankole.ca. Nothing is sent until you send it, and what you write is between you and me.

Email

If you email me at partnerships@josephbankole.ca, I have your message and your email address, for the obvious reason that you sent them to me. I use them to reply to you and nothing else. I do not add you to a mailing list, and I do not pass your address to anyone.

Links to other sites

This site links out to LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, and to my other projects, along with sources cited in the writing. My GitHub profile is listed only in the homepage's structured data, not as a link. Once you follow a link, you are on someone else's site under their rules. I have no control over what they collect and no visibility into it.

Children

This site is aimed at working professionals. It is not directed at children, and I do not knowingly collect anything from them.

Your choices

Turn on Do Not Track in your browser and PostHog stops receiving events from you, though its script still loads and keeps the identifier described above. Block scripts, use a content blocker, or clear your browser storage and the anonymous identifier disappears. If you want the analytics record of your visit deleted and can tell me roughly when you visited, email me and I will do it, though be aware that with no name attached to any of it, there may be very little to find.

Changes

If I add anything that changes what is collected, I will update this page and change the date at the top. This is a static site kept in version control, so the edit history is a matter of record.
