Reuters reported on 3 September 2026 that technical teams at the European Central Bank and Banco Central do Brasil are assessing whether Pix and TIPS can be connected, citing sources close to the work. The ECB told Reuters there is “an ongoing preliminary investigation exploring a potential interlinking” between its TARGET Instant Payment Settlement platform and Pix, and that it named Pix a currency corridor under exploration in June [1]. Brazil’s central bank declined to comment [1].
Folha de S.Paulo had the internal schedule the same day. An internal Banco Central document puts nine of the bank’s departments on the study, with the pre-investigation stage, legal, technical, operational and security, due to finish this month [2][3]. Deeper feasibility work runs from October 2026 to March 2027, an implementation phase from April 2027 to June 2028 waits on approval by both central banks, a technical corridor is pencilled in for November 2027 and an operational pilot for June 2028 [2][4]. A committee of the bank’s deputy heads visits the ECB in October [2].
TIPS is the Eurosystem’s settlement layer for instant euro payments, and the ECB has spent two years wiring it to other countries’ rails. Exploratory work with India’s Unified Payments Interface opened in October 2024, the Governing Council moved that link to a realisation phase on 20 November 2025, a feasibility assessment with Switzerland’s SIC Instant Payments system opened in September 2025, and a connection to Nexus Global Payments, which joins the fast payment systems of Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and India, is still under exploration [5][6]. Pix would be the first of the named corridors outside Europe and Asia [5].
Seven months separate the technical corridor in November 2027 from the June 2028 pilot. That is where the settlement mechanics and the legal agreements get argued over, and the schedule already says the implementation phase cannot start until both central banks approve it. The UPI link took thirteen months to get from exploratory phase to realisation phase [5].
Thailand approves stablecoin principles and publishes nothing
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission approved a set of principles on 3 September 2026 to tighten oversight of stablecoin transactions by digital asset businesses, per a report at coindesk.cc that cites the regulator’s own channels and gives no requirement, threshold or effective date [7]. The Bangkok Post’s report on the same decision sits behind a paywall and the SEC’s release was not reachable this morning, so what the principles ask of an exchange or a custodian is not printed here.
A quiet weekend
Nothing else in agentic commerce or AI payments cleared the desk’s two-source bar in the last 48 hours. The items doing the rounds on Friday were re-reports of stories this brief already carried: Anthropic’s commerce agent blueprint from 2 September, the Siemens payment on Swift’s shared ledger from the 4 September edition, and Singapore’s stablecoin consultation from 1 September. The Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where NPCI is expected to show agent payments on UPI, opens this week.
Brazil’s central bank has nine departments on the Pix link and no comment on it.
